Nora's story: On the streets of Europe (Part 3)

Nora comes from a poor family in Nigeria and was constantly worrying about how to make ends meet. One day she met a woman who told her she could arrange a job for her abroad. Nora thought this was an opportunity to support her family so she gladly agreed. The woman told her she had to swear a voodoo oath before leaving to establish trust between them. After the ceremony Nora left together with a group of other women. The lady was accompanying them. When they had left Nigeria the woman’s attitude changed and she became harsh and unfriendly. On the way to Libya she forced the girls to prostitute themselves in bars and nightclubs. Nora tried to resist but was severely beaten. When they arrived in Libya Nora was sold to a brothel where she stayed for nine months and was not allowed to leave. Finally she was released and put on a boat to Italy. Having arrived there she hoped she would get the job she had been promised but was forced into street prostitution. She managed to escape and ended up in Germany. She is afraid the traffickers will harm her family back home because they keep calling her mother and threatening her. Telling the Real Story is an information campaign to raise awareness about the dangers involved in using the smuggling route, including through Libya. The campaign is targeting people in different countries who are planning to undertake this dangerous journey. The TRS campaign also aims at providing information on complementary pathways as alternative and regular opportunities to irregular movement (i.e. scholarships, family reunification, labour mobility).
