“Suddenly, at nightfall, unknown people opened fire at us. I remember everyone ran away to survive. I was with some people who got in a car. I guess most of the others died. I don’t want to remember those sad moments.” Khadar wanted to go to Europe, encouraged by friends who sent nice stories about their life there. He ended up in smugglers’ camps in Sudan and Libya, where people were starving and beaten, and girls were raped. After a dramatic escape he reached Egypt.
