Saransika's father fled Sri Lanka in 2006 after receiving death threats. He settled in Australia. Saransika's mother and two siblings attempted to join him by taking a smuggler boat from Indonesia to Australia. The boat sank, and Saransika's mother and siblings died. She was rescued after 14 hours in the water and now lives in Indonesia by herself. Under current Australian asylum seeker policy, she cannot join her father to live with him.
