Syria: Homs Evacuation
Australia for UNHCR
Description
Millions of Syrians are trapped in hard to reach or besieged areas across Syria. On Thursday, 6 February, the parties to the conflict in Syria agreed under UN auspices to a three day 'humanitarian pause' in the Old City of Homs in order to allow the evacuation of the critically ill, women and children and the delivery of aid supplies to some 2,500 people trapped in the city for the past one year and eight months. UN agencies, including the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), working alongside the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), met the evacuees, provided them with food and medical care.
