This innovative shelter solution provides refugees safety, privacy and protection from the elements. With windows, solar panels for lighting and a lockable door, RHUs provide a durable and weatherproof space for up to five people. They can be assembled within a few hours and have a lifespan of three years, providing a longer-lasting alternative to tents, which typically need to be replaced every 12 months. The Refugee Housing Unit (RHU) is an innovative shelter solution resulting from a collaborative research & development project undertaken by Better Shelter and UNHCR, with the support of the IKEA Foundation. This innovative partnership was launched with the aim of developing an improved shelter solution that provides greater dignity and supports the protection of refugees and other people of concern.
