Providing Light After Dark for Refugees: IKEA and UNHCR
Australia for UNHCR
Description
Every year, there are millions of new refugee children and refugee families. Forced to flee their homes because of war, conflict or natural disaster. They find safety and shelter in the UN Refugee Agency’s (UNHCR) camps like this one in Azraq refugee camp in Jordan. Access to energy and lighting is a critical issue for refugees living within camps, with a serious impact on their safety, security, health, education and income. The IKEA Foundation is working with UNHCR to improve access to lighting and energy for refugees in these camps. For every LED light bulb sold in a participating IKEA store during the campaign period the IKEA Foundation will donate €1 to UNHCR. By improving access to cleaner, renewable, sustainable and user-friendly energy supplies, the IKEA Foundation and UNHCR are making refugee camps safer and more suitable places for the many families who live in them.
