Refugee's Dream Realised In Australia

"I believe my life here… is all about my mother’s sacrifice. She always had a dream that there is another place for her girls to live safely." Canberra artist and former Afghan refugee Hangama Obaidullah fled war in Afghanistan with her mother and siblings in 2001. She shares how her mother's bravery paved the way for her and her siblings to live freely and safely in Australia. Hangama now uses her skills and passion to run weekly art workshops in Canberra for women from migrant and refugee backgrounds, providing them with a space for connection and storytelling. The artist also raises awareness about the challenges facing people in Afghanistan through her own drawings, paintings, and photos. She was nominated last year for the Australia for UNHCR – SBS Les Murray Award for Refugee Recognition, which celebrates the talent, creativity and courage of refugees who are helping to make Australia more inclusive and diverse.
