Cholera outbreak in Tanzania kills 31, of which 29 Burundian refugees

Refugees are fleeing Burundi into neighbouring countries - more than 105,000 have now sought shelter in Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A cholera epidemic was declared by the Tanzanian government in late May, in the Kigoma area of Lake Tanganyika where many of the refugees are living. 31 people have been killed by the outbreak, of which 29 are Burundian refugees. The spread of disease has has become a new and worrying complication, as refugees living in crowded living conditions remain extremely vulnerable. UNHCR is providing medical care, clean water and is working to move refugees to more suitable living conditions to improve health and living conditions.
