Empowering women through UNHCR Community Centres
UNHCR Syria
Description
“In order to face threats, I need to have confidence in myself that I can! And they’re not better than me,” said Ritta, during a self-defence training through one of UNHCR's community centres. Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, starts the #16Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). Women and girls uprooted from their homes face substantial challenges on a daily basis. Despite unimaginable hardships and obstacles, many displaced women in Syria manage to push through barriers and stand up to support their families and their communities. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, through our network of community centres provides protection services including sexual gender-based violence prevention and response, awareness sessions and many programmes aiming to empower women through literacy classes, livelihoods support, and self-defence training.
