A human rights activist and leader of the Crimean Tatar people, who devoted his life to fighting against the Soviet system, defending the rights of the Crimean Tatars. He spent 15 years in prison. In 1998, he was awarded the UNHCR Nansen Award for his efforts to return the Crimean Tatars deported during World War II to their homeland in Crimea. After the occupation of the peninsula by Russia in 2014, Mustafa Dzhemilev continues to defend the rights of his people.
