What is the DIFFERENCE between a REFUGEE and a MIGRANT? Millions of people have left their homes all around the world in search of a better future for their families, sometimes risking their lives on dangerous journeys. The reasons people move can be complex. Some are migrants. Some are refugees. Mixing these terms can cause problems. So who is a refugee? Someone who is forced to flee their country, escaping, conflict, violence or persecution. Refugees are defined and protected in international law. They can’t be sent back home if their lives would be at risk. There are over 25 million refugees across the world. Over half are children. UNHCR has a special mandate to work on behalf of refugees. Everyone deserves to live with respect and dignity.
