Uitleg over vluchtelingen: Wat is een ontheemde?
UNHCR Nederland
Description
Who is an IDP? IDP stands for 'internally displaced person'. IDPs have been forced to leave their home to escape violence and conflict, human rights violations and natural disasters. Unlike refugees who cross borders to find safety, IDPs leave home but stay in their own country, often out of reach of humanitarian aid and assistance. They are among the world’s most vulnerable people. There are over 40 million IDPs worldwide. States have a duty to protect IDPs' rights. But some governments are unable or unwilling to do so. UNHCR advocates for their rights and provides support helping to ensure everyone lives in safety and dignity.
