Description
Refugees from Afghanistan comprise the largest protracted refugee population in Asia, and the second largest refugee population in the world. In light of the increasingly deteriorating security situation in many parts of the country, the violence continues to drive people from their homes in 2018. 5 things to know about Afghan refugees: 1. Afghans make up 10% of the world’s refugees. That’s 2.5 million people. 2. Nearly 2 million more have fled their homes but are still in Afghanistan. The internally displaced are often hard to reach and vulnerable. 3. Over half of Afghan refugees are children. Many don’t have the chance to go to school, learn and play. 4. Violence continues to drive Afghans from their homes. Civilians are targets as security deteriorates in parts of the country. 5. But some Afghans are also choosing to return. More than 5.2 million have come back. UNHCR supports the Afghan government in helping those who are ready to make a safe and dignified return.
