Escalating conflict in Cameroon’s Northwest and Southwest regions has displaced hundreds of thousands of people within and outside the country. Many who have crossed into neighboring Nigeria fled with very little belongings and are struggling to cope with life in exile. Anglophone Cameroonians began fleeing violence in the country since October 2017 and have continued to pour into Nigeria’s Cross River, Taraba, Benue and Akwa-Ibom states. UNHCR and the Nigerian government has registered over 30,000 refugees, with women and children accounting for 80 per cent of the population. Rachel Agah fled Cameroon nine months ago after her husband was shot dead. She now lives in Adagom refugee settlement which hosts over 7,000 refugees, nearly double its capacity of 4,000. Resources are stretched thin and Rachel, like many residents here, is struggling to cope with life in exile and relies on UNHCR and aid agencies for help to rebuild.
