A SCHOOLYARD FOR ALL

Description

The Community Support Project was initiated by UNHCR in partnership with the Ministry of Education, and implemented by Oecumene Studio. The project comprises a series of participatory ‘design and construct’ workshops for the Egyptian and Syrian students, and teachers at Gamasa Experimental School, as well as members of the local community. Gamasa Experimental School is a public school in Gamasa El-Masyaf, which hosts a significant number of Syrian students, considering its limited recreational space and resources. The Egyptian and Syrian students, as well as members from the community have worked collectively over 17 days to redesign and re-construct the schoolyard; not only learning new skills from experienced architects and professionals from multi-disciplinary backgrounds, but also taking ownership of what will be their shared recreational space. A Schoolyard for All aims to help foster a safe and friendly educational environment, which will lead to the overarching goal of enhancing co-existence among Egyptian and Syrian students at the school.
