Use of AI in UNHCR Encashment Centre
UNHCR Afghanistan
Description
New innovative technology has reduced waiting times for returning refugees and significantly improved quality and integrity of data collection in UNHCR’s encashment centres in Afghanistan. In challenging environments, within seconds, the technology enables field colleagues and partner staff to efficiently scan identification documents issued by the Pakistani government to Afghan refugees. UNHCR has used the new technology since last month. The solution helps expedite assistance for returning refugees, including cash grants and support for urgent needs and transportation. Naqibullah, 40, who recently returned from Pakistan, said: "We didn't have to wait long to receive our cash grant. We are very pleased with the services provided at this centre." The use of new technologies, including AI enabled solutions is a growing trend worldwide, and UNHCR’s goal is to enhance services for people by adapting this innovative technology, while prioritising data protection and security.
