Meet Taban Shoresh: 2025 Nansen Award Winner Empowering Women in Iraq

In 2016, aid worker and women's rights activist Taban Shoresh founded The Lotus Flower, a women-led organization supporting conflict survivors in Iraq. A genocide survivor, Taban was inspired by her own experiences to make a real difference in the lives of displaced women and girls in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Many of the survivors supported by The Lotus Flower have lost their homes and families and suffered rape, torture, trafficking and slavery. Starting with just two staff members in 2016, The Lotus Flower now employs 100 people who empower women and girls through education, sports, skills development, livelihoods, mental health support, and advocacy against gender-based violence. To date, the organization has supported over 84,000 people. The UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award was established in honour of Norwegian humanitarian, scientist, explorer and diplomat Fridtjof Nansen. This prestigious honour is given annually to individuals, groups or organizations in recognition of outstanding work to help refugees, internally displaced people and stateless people. #nansen #refugees #iraq
