Crisis deepens in Northern Mozambique

In recent weeks, nearly 100,000 people have fled northern #Mozambique due to escalating violence. Armed groups are striking villages simultaneously, often at night, deepening the crisis in the region. The violence has now spread to areas that had previously hosted displaced families. As villages are burned and civilians attacked, families are fleeing in extreme fear with nothing, often becoming separated in the chaos. Many are being displaced for the second or third time this year. Those fleeing are taking shelter in makeshift sites such as schools or open fields. Women and girls face heightened risks during these journeys. Lack of lighting, privacy and safe routes are increasing their exposure to sexual and gender-based violence. Children are also severely affected. Many arrive at makeshift sites exhausted, traumatized, malnourished, injured or separated from their families and unaccompanied. Already fragile host communities are overwhelmed by the sudden influx of displaced families. Many are sleeping in the open without access to basic services. Chronic underfunding has placed critical strain on humanitarian operations, impacting protection, shelter, food, water and sanitation services. With only 50% of 2025 funding secured, UNHCR is calling for urgent international support to meet rising needs.
