Women are girls are bearing the brunt of the crisis. They’re doing much of the clean up work, and rebuilding their homes and communities https://t.co/jrofg6cH8a

Containing the cholera outbreak remains a key priority. Water treatment plants have been set up, & a vaccination campaign is planned. But hospitals & health clinics are massively over-stretched in the face of massive needs #CycloneIdai

Beira is now accessible by road making it easier for aid to arrive. But the most affected areas, where the needs are highest, are still cut off. Aid can only be delivered by helicopters, but they can’t get deliver what’s needed quickly enough #CycloneIdai https://t.co/hR7pEoEZ3w

Crops have been devastated. Some 670,000 hectares thought to have been destroyed. Food was already scarce before #CycloneIdai. It came just before the harvest was due. Real risk of famine in the region in the months ahead.

Some are choosing to leave the most badly affected areas and go to displacement sites or other shelters in Beira town. Even though the waters are down, the damage is extensive. #CycloneIdai https://t.co/4wpnsx48Gd

Children are particularly vulnerable now. Many of them are traumatised. School is on hold for the time being. Risk of kids being trafficked or forced to work. Girls at heightened risk of early marriage. #CycloneIdai https://t.co/5qZPOcGRcw

More than 140,000 have been forced to flee their homes in Mozambique. Most want to return home to what’s left of their houses as soon as possible, and begin to rebuild. This doorframe is all that’s left of one family’s house #CycloneIdai https://t.co/BbwzuBJx3y

Latest update from Beira & the response to #CycloneIdai Official death toll now at 493, but will rise in the days and week ahead Now in a 2nd phase of ‘emergency’, waters have receded but the needs are massive, without aid death toll will rise much higher
