I have just returned from Iran where I saw how the Afghan refugee crisis is growing. To avoid the worst we must further scale up relief operations in Afghanistan in which dozens of agencies are involved, and ensure that the sanction regime does not block humanitarian activities.

Iran, which has hosted Afghan refugees for decades, is now facing new arrivals from Afghanistan. I visited a site in Sistan and Baluchistan being built with UNHCR’s help to receive some of them.
