UNHCR teams on the ground have started to assist new arrivals from Sudan in neighbouring countries, especially Chad. We are working closely with partners and host governments on preparations to receive more refugees as fighting in Sudan continues to displace civilians.

On behalf of UNHCR, sincerest condolences to our @UNmigration friends who tragically lost a colleague caught in crossfire in Sudan. This senseless conflict is increasingly causing death and destruction among civilians. It must end immediately. https://t.co/xAX0g4PElr

Refugees are strong. Refugees inspire. Refugees contribute. Look at the Afghan women national football team @AfghanWnt whom I met in Melbourne today! With thanks to @Craig_Foster, @mvfcwomen and all Australians for giving these courageous women a chance to win. https://t.co/pJCMfgc7Du

As #Ramadan ends and Muslims prepare to celebrate #EidAlFitr, I wish them peace and joy. I think especially of the people of Sudan, whose holiday is marked by violence. I join @antonioguterres in appealing to those with guns to stop using them, for the sake of their own people.

An impressive and encouraging meeting with Foreign Minister @SenatorWong: we had a very strategic discussion about Australia’s strong humanitarian role in responding to refugee crises worldwide and especially in the region — including through resettlement and other pathways. https://t.co/El2I3CU7Xv

An honour to be welcomed by Prime Minister @AlboMP - this is the first visit of a High Commissioner for refugees to Australia in 11 years and I look forward to good discussions on Australia’s global and regional humanitarian role, refugee resettlement and asylum issues. https://t.co/2r1SvjqQoR
