Correction: 40,000 IDPs live in the wider Bunia area. Over 14,000 are displaced and live in the site of Kigonze.

As the sun sets on Kigonze, home to 14,000 displaced people, I leave with a twinge of sadness that people living here are unable to return home due to insecurity and continuous violence They need support, but more than anything, they need peace to return home. #LeaveNoOneBehind https://t.co/ZTHp9PYG9R

We need more journalists like those from ⁦@AlJazeera⁩ to tell the story of the brutal attacks in DRC. I was in Kigonze camp yesterday, home to 14,000 displaced people, all have fled attacks by various militias across Ituri, in the eastern region. https://t.co/WXGWZzPLXg

“I don’t know how I survived” Madeleine was 8 months pregnant when her village was attacked. 4 of her children were killed. She and her baby survived. She lost her limbs. Madeleine is not an exception in Ituri where I am. HCR provides mental health support to survivors in DRC. https://t.co/HQ7a5KCq8z

“Underfunded crises” isn’t just a talking point for humanitarians. Underfunding has real impacts on real people Less shelters! Less to no education! Less protection for vulnerable women and girls! This is unfortunately what I’m seeing in Eastern DRC. https://t.co/8BYawss3sg

Just arrived in the DRC, which hosts over 500k refugees and 5.6m people displaced internally inside the country. This makes it the largest IDP crisis on the African continent. I am on my way to Bunia to meet with those whose lives have been uprooted. https://t.co/qodp330DQ6

As I head to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, my mind is racing to the refugees and internally displaced people I’ll meet. Their lives. Their challenges. These are my thoughts from the road. @UNHCR_DRC https://t.co/f3OMf57CjS
